๐ฎ๐ช L’Arche Ireland – International Volunteer Opportunity
L'Arche Ireland brings together people with and without intellectual disabilities to live, work and learn together in community. L’Arche Ireland operates communities including Dublin, Cork and Kilkenny. (L'Arche Ireland)
๐ฅ Who can apply?
L’Arche Ireland specifically says it welcomes volunteers from around the globe, as well as people from Ireland, to spend a year or longer living in the community with its Core Members. (L'Arche Ireland)
This makes it potentially suitable for an international applicant who wants:
International volunteering experience
Social-care experience
Disability-support experience
Community development experience
Cultural exchange
English-language practice
Personal and professional development
๐ What does the volunteer receive?
The volunteer position is not a paid employment position, but L’Arche provides significant support. According to its current volunteer information, volunteers receive:
| Benefit | Details |
|---|---|
| ๐ Accommodation | Own room |
| ๐ฝ️ Food | Provided |

๐ Where?
The main communities include:
Dublin – L’Arche Dublin has three community houses in Baldoyle and welcomes assistants from around the world. The Dublin community notes that volunteers receive training and experience supporting Core Members with significant support needs. (L'Arche Ireland)
Cork – L’Arche Cork operates from its community in Togher, Cork. (L'Arche Ireland)
Kilkenny – L’Arche Kilkenny is one of the organisation's established communities. (L'Arche Ireland)
๐ง๐ฆฝ What would you actually do?
The role is based around sharing daily community life and supporting adults with intellectual disabilities.
Activities can include:
Helping with daily routines
Cooking and meals
Recreation
Walking and outings
Arts and crafts
Sports
Music and dancing
Community activities
Supporting independence
Spending time and building relationships with Core Members
L’Arche describes its approach as relationship-based care and person-centred support. (L'Arche Ireland)
⚠️ Important requirement for international applicants
Because volunteers may work with vulnerable adults, Garda Vetting/Police Clearance is required. L’Arche states that applicants who live outside Ireland, or who have lived outside Ireland for six months or longer, must provide a foreign police clearance certificate from the relevant country/countries of residence. (L'Arche Ireland)
For a Tanzanian applicant, this means you should expect a police-clearance requirement as part of the process.
๐ถ Is it a fully funded opportunity?
Not in the same sense as a fully funded scholarship.
L’Arche provides:
Accommodation
Food
Holiday time
Personal allowance/nominal cost support
Training
Supervision and support
But it does not pay volunteers a salary. (L'Arche Ireland)
Therefore, an applicant should investigate Irish immigration/visa requirements, travel costs, insurance and any other costs that remain the volunteer's responsibility before applying.
